KCTY Radio Association invites students for massages and soothing sounds on Thursday, Feb 18 at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in E Building @ LAC. LBCC's accreditation status has been reaffirmed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. With the convenience of shopping, researching materials and making friends with someone across the ocean on the Internet, students are advised to be careful when registering any kind of personal information online. Underground criminals and hackers are on the loose as bank account numbers are the most expensive trade of personal details stolen from the world-wide web, said a survey released by security vendor Symantec Corp.

With former Vice President Al Gore's winning the Nobel peace prize Friday, Oct. 12 for his efforts to fight global warming, students and teacher at LBCC expressed their views on the controversial debate. Tuition increases for CSU and U.C. students

Students planning to transfer to CSU or U.C. schools should prepare their bank accounts after the CSU Board of Trustees and U.C. Board of Regents approved yet another tuition increase, the fifth of its kind in the last six years. The heightened rates were implemented at the beginning of this semester and affect approximately 626,000 students in California.

Dean of students conveys his goals

As the new dean of student affairs, Byron Breland said he views Community Colleges as the "gem of education." Breland, who was hired July 2, replaced acting Dean Jeri Carter, who retired in the Spring after 25 years of service in various jobs in various jobs.

Long lines disruptive

With the new semester finally here, both students and employees are affected by long lines. The average wait for the line snaking outside the Financial Aid office is 30 minutes, not including the five seats inside the office where students are waiting to be called upon by one of the advisors.

Fueling the student body

About 50 percent of male students and 30 percent of female students ages 18-25 are obese or overweight, according to an ongoing survey conducted by Live Science. Furthermore, most college students lead unhealthy lives marked by harmful diets and little physical activity, according to experts.

Dave Frattalone doesn't know which came first "The chicken or the egg", but PCC offers them both Long Beach City College's Horticulture program provides training for students in the diverse field. Brian Hastie garden manager, said the PCC program isn't about just pruning twigs and branches, but also helps to prune the conditions of the community by giving Thanksgiving baskets with full trimmings to needy families.

Experts lend helping ears

On-line, career, athletic, transfer, academic and personal counseling are available at LBCC. The personal counseling service has existed at LBCC for 10 years said Dr. Katy Reynolds, the full-time clinical psychologist. "Counselors are trained to be objective," Reynolds said.

Self-paced computer classes offer relief

Many people are busy trying to juggle everyday priorities, so LBCC offers computer classes for people with packed schedules. Computer Applications and Office Technology has offered self-pace classes on both LBCC campuses for about 20 years, with the first class at PCC, said Miriam Lynch, a teacher in the department.

ASB leads the campus

The Associated Student Body Board of Directors since taking office earlier this semester, has gotten off to a quick start. Join-A-Club day, NWC: The Race show and the LAC Pool showing of "Jaws" are just three of the events they have either sponsored or co-sponsored.

Supplemental instruction assistant coordinator Martina Hills walked out of the B Building elevator with a smile on her face despite having been stuck inside for roughly 40 minutes at around 3 p.m. Sept. 6. "It was really hot. I had to take my sweater off, but I didn't panic or anything," she said.

Invisible students appearing

Empty seats in classrooms are being taken by "invisible" students if teachers aren't careful in tracking students' attendance, according to an LBCC alert circulating at the beginning of the semester. Invisible students are those who either forgot to pay and register or are administratively dropped from a class.

Student body commemorates 9/11 anniversary

With the flag at half-staff, students and teachers listened to associate student body chief executive officer Tom Chek as he spoke in a tone of inspiration to commemorate Sept. 11 at noon at the LAC. Along with students, police, firefighters and emergency response personnel were on hand for a brief moment of silence to remember the victims.

Student dies after apparent asthma attack

LBCC student James Johnson, 53, died early Friday morning, Sept. 6 at St. Mary's Medical Center, following what LBCC officials believe was an asthma attack at the PCC. A trust fund established by Dean of Student Affairs Byron Breland has been set up to help family members pay for funeral expenses.

'NWC' rips racial slurs

"N*GGER, W*TBACK, CH*NK," is the name of a trio of actors who present a no holds barred concert that takes a different approach to the sensitive subject of race on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. in the LAC Auditorium.

Vincent Jordan was unanimously elected to serve as Fall 2007 president for the LAC Student Senate. Jordan, who has been attending LBCC since 2005, has held many other positions in different campus organizations. Jordan said, "I intend to carry on the great tradition of Student Senate president.

Robert Garcia new director of Public and Media Relations
The new school year brings a new member to the Community and Relations Department at LBCC. As of June 11, Robert Garcia is the new director of Public and Media Relations for the school. Garcia earned a bachelor of arts in communications from Cal State Long Beach and a master's degree in communications from USC.

80th anniversary picnic

80th anniversary picnic
More than 200 students, teachers, alumni and people from around the community joined LBCC to celebrate the school's 80th anniversary with a picnic Saturday, Sept. 15 outside the LAC Hall of Champions Gym. "It was a great to give back something to the community," Director of Community and Governmental Relations Mark Taylor said at the picnic.
