I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel like it has taken me forever to get through the community college level of what seems to be countless years of education. I'm on the less approved six-year plan.

After that, I'm off to my university of choice.

This semester, I decided I would plan to visit schools in Ohio and Kentucky and get serious about transferring. Then gas prices sky rocketed and, long story short, I canceled the trip and decided to visit another prospective school. I got on a plane and flew to Northern California to visit San Francisco State University.

It was my first time visiting "The City" and I was fortunate enough to have a friend already attending the school and program I am interested in. Adam Lau, a former LBCC student, showed me around the campus and journalism department as well as some of the city.

To be honest, it reminded me of Long Beach, except there was far less traffic and everyone had gone "green." I loved everything about it.

While visiting the SFSU campus I sat in on a Mass Communication Law class. The professor, James Wagstaffe was one of the most energetic professors I've seen lecture. It seemed to me he was in love with what he was teaching and wanted everyone else to love it too. After talking to a few journalism students, it was apparent that their hard work was paying off.

It was exciting to visit the SFSU Journalism Department because it made me realize I have to start working harder. Unlike a community college, things are fast-paced at a university and a standard of work is expected.

I stayed with a friend of mine, Lyhn Nguyen, also a former LBCC student and a senior attending the University of California Berkeley. Having connections made it possible to keep my checking account open and it was also good to know people who knew their way around the Bay area.

My trip to visit SFSU was important to me not just because I was getting closer to a long-time goal of mine, but also because my grandmother passed away from a rare cancer suddenly in March.

While visiting her in the hospital one day, I discovered her doctor was also the doctor of a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist who is still prominent in the industry today. I talked to her for a while about my plans for transferring and visiting schools. She later told my family she was proud that I was pursuing a passion of mine.

My grandmother was a huge driving force in my life for getting the education I wanted. After my educational trip to SFSU, I am even more motivated to transfer.
