Representatives from UC Berkeley visited LBCC on Sunday, May 3 in the Nordic Lounge to talk about the university's admission process, housing, and financial aid. Several Berkeley alumni, called the Southern CAL Alumni Coalition, spoke about their experiences at Berkeley and what they have accomplished since graduating.
One of the alumni, Felipe Agredano, spoke about his past experience and how he reached his goal of attending Harvard graduate school. He encouraged students to "go to Berkeley and beyond, and to remember to keep it real."
LBCC students watched a video about housing opportunities in Berkeley. There are more than 10 housing options students can choose from, depending on their wants or needs, and 14 eatery options are available on campus. Other services provided are childcare, unlimited transportation, and a night escort service (where students can have a Community Service Officers escort them to their unit).
Financial aid offers students grants, loans, and work study. Several alumni suggested to take advantage of the work study offered by financial aid. They recommended that if students do not qualify for grants, they could consider getting a loan through financial aid.
Sylvia Juarez, a member of the Coalition, said that the group's goal during the recent visit to LBCC was to have Southern California students learn about Berkeley. Juarez said that she, along with the other alumni, are willing to help students with their personal statements during their application process.
Adrian Ambriz went to the Northern California tour during Spring Break and, as a result, chose Berkeley. "I thought the campus was very stunning and I also heard about the prestige that it had as well," he said.
The Berkeley alumni encouraged students to go the Transfer Center to learn about the transfer process and to help them decide which school fits them the best.
