In addition to winning the South Coast Conference title and representing LBCC in the Super Regional tournament, the Viking dugout has one more reason to celebrate.
Head Coach Casey Crook was named South Coast Conference Coach of the Year, an award he says goes hand in hand with winning the conference title.
"The goal is to win championships, not to win coach of the year. That was one of the goals we set at the beginning of the year," Crook said.
Crook has been the Viking's baseball head coach for 16 seasons, and even though his overall record (415-292-6) implies that the coach has done an exceptional job, Crook is modest and attributes his award to the dedication of his coaching staff and hard work of every player on the team.
Crook's eyes are set on attaining another state championship, and even though the stats indicate that other teams are stronger than the Vikings, Crook says, "We were probably picked to finish fourth at the beginning of the year," proving that stats do not win championships.
The Vikings are confident that they will reach Fresno as a finalist in the State Championships and Crook says now his team is beginning to gain more momentum. "We improved quite a bit. Some individuals have improved tremendously. You always feel like you could do better," Crook said.
LBCC's baseball team will now head to San Diego to play for a spot in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Championship. After defeating Grossmont in the first round, the Vikings will play Santa Ana College on Friday, May 15, at Palomar.
They swept Grossmont, two games to zero in the first round, 6-4 and 10-8.
The two teams faced each other once early in the season, which ended in an 8-2 home victory for the Vikings.
