With a small squad on hand, the Vikings Track and Field team still posted a strong performance at the Southern California Regionals on Saturday, May 2, at Mt. Sac College.
LBCC had four athletes on hand for the regional meet and three were able to qualify for the upcoming State Finals on Friday, May 15 and Saturday the 16 at San Mateo College.
LBCC Freshmen Michael Hancock, a South Coast Conference Champion and an SCC Running Athletes of the Year winner, won the Southern California championship with a time of 13.77 in the 110-H, which ties the LBCC school record. His time has him ranked third in the nation among community colleges.
His showing at the regionals has Hancock feeling confident for state. "I'm finally getting into the shape I need to be in," he said. "Now it's time to continue my dominance and do what I do best and smash. I feel confident about state. My conditioning is good, my training is good and I feel like I'm going to win."
Bobby Workman, who finished second in the SCC in the 400-H, finished 5th at the Southern California regionals, also earning a spot in the State Championships in San Mateo. He ran a personal best of 53.85.
LBCC Track and Field Head Coach John Hall was pleased with how his team performed at the regional meet. "We had a small group going into the (regional) final. The meet went as expected.
Both hurdlers, Bobby and Michael, have been waiting to come down, and both set personal records. I was really satisfied with their performances," Hall said. He also has high hopes for the State Championships.
"If Michael wins at the state finals he'll be the 18th state champ to come out of LBCC. In my four seasons as head coach I've had two State Champs, and it would be very special to be able to get that third."
Ryan Lauderdale finished 3rd at regionals in the javelin throw with a distance of 183'11," earning a place in the State Championships.
