Several thousand people at LBCC's graduation ceremony Thursday, May 28 heard the keynote speaker Sen. Alan Lowenthal say new graduates should never give up on finding careers despite the struggling economy.
Lowenthal "understands the need of our colleges and the need that it fills," LBCC President Eloy Oakley said after the graduation.
An emotional valedictorian speech given by Tricia Carter was received enthusiastically by the audience as they cheered for her achievement.
Graduate Christopher Storhaug said, "I thought everything in the graduation ceremony went wonderfully. It was a really good idea by the staff to have a practice ceremony before the actual real deal. The releasing of the doves was something special, too. All around, it was outstanding."
Before the ceremony held at Veterans Stadium, the LBCC Studio Singers entertained the audience as they danced and sang a medley of several Motown hits.
The LBCC Brass Ensemble performed five songs, including the graduation classic "Pomp and Circumstance."
Lowenthal said the graduates of 2009 "have enhanced their career chances amid downturn."
Graduate David Barrera said, "The 2009 commencement was the perfect final touch to graduates educational career at LBCC. The event had a seamless transition. If anything did go wrong, I was too preoccupied as a marshall, guiding students, to notice. Family members reported that the event did not have a dull moment and that morale was high for all."
