Study-abroad programs give students an opportunity to learn about different cultures and travel to exotic places while earning course credit for the college. Next summer groups of LBCC students will explore the world and travel to Thailand and Cambodia, China and Spain.
According to LBCC's study abroad Web site, the previous trips have been successful and students have given a plenty of positive feedback.
"Many students comment that they learned more about the United States and the rest of the world's perceptions of the United States when they were outside the country than all the time they had spent in it," the Web site states. The summary also explains the study-abroad program is not only for students. Anyone is eligible as long as a person is enrolled in one of the program related courses.
Student Vanessa Zuniga has not traveled with the program but she finds it interesting.
"I would love to do it, but unfortunately I cannot because I work full-time," Zuniga said "I have been in Europe before and if I could choose any place to travel to, I would go to Australia."
Fellow student Stephanie Moncada has never been out of the country, except to Baja California, and if she had a chance, she would attend the program in Spain.
"I think it is great that the school offers these study abroad programs because they give students new experiences by showing what there actually is out there," Moncada said.
The 2010 Study Abroad programs are planned in Thailand and Cambodia, China and Spain.
The Thailand and Cambodia trip is scheduled from May 27 to June 19, and the program cost is $2,999, excluding tuition fees and personal expenses. Students may choose to take Philosophy 6, Introduction to Philosophy, or Philosophy 8, Introduction to Non-Western Philosophy.
The trip to China will be from July 3 to Aug. 4 and the program cost is $3,939, excluding tuition fees and personal expenses. Students may choose to complete either any course of Chinese or English 32, Masterpieces of Asian Literature.
Trip to Spain is from May 28 to June 25. The program cost is $4,495, excluding tuition fees and personal expenses. Students may enroll in any Spanish course.
