Despite the team's woes this season, the LBCC men's cross-country team will send three individuals to the California Community College Athletic Association Cross Country State Championships.
The meet is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 19 in Woodward Park, Fresno.
At the state championships, the women will race at 10 a.m. and the men's race will begin at 11.
While LBCC failed to make the state championships as a team, freshmen sprinters Edwin Rodriguez, Charles Brewer and Javier Ramos represent the Vikings in the meet.
In the team's latest race, Long Beach totaled 506 points and finished 22nd out of 28 teams, clocking in at 1:55:14 at the Southern California Cross Country Championship.
The four-mile race was contested at Mt. San Antonio College's hilly course on Friday, Nov. 6.
San Bernardino Valley, Orange Coast and Glendale took the top three places in the team race category.
Rodriguez placed 72nd overall with a time of 22:30, while Brewer clocked in at 22:35, good for a 77th place finish. Ramos came in 88th place at 22:43.
Southwestern's Jahir Mohamed clocked in first at 20:24, while El Camino's Jose Lezama and David Cardona took 2nd and 3rd with times of 20:34 and 20:43.
Four other Vikings participated at the SoCal Regionals, including sophomore Doug Curran, who finished 134th with a time of 23:56.
Freshmen Alex Eastly finished 150th (23:50), David Farreugia placed 166th (24:12), and Marquise Davis 178th (24:53).
2009 marks a return for the men's squad as the team individually and collectively failed to qualify for the 2008 state championships.
Meanwhile, two of LBCC's women's runners have qualified for the state championship meet this weekend.
Freshman Malia Palacios and sophomore Carley Lopez will represent the Vikings in the race this weekend.
LBCC did not qualify as a team, coming in 21st out of the 28 competing schools.
At the SoCal Regional Championships, Palacios placed 51st and Lopez came in 76th.
The championship race was run at Mt. San Antonio. Palacios turned in her personal best time, finishing the three-mile course in 20:04.
Lopez came in with a time of 20:35.
Palacios and Lopez were two out of six Vikings who competed at Mt SAC. Four of their teammates raced with them at the SoCal Championships.

Prior to the SoCal championships, LBCC competed in the South Coast Conference Championships.
Their finish in the race solidified their spot in the SoCal run. Lopez led the Vikings with a 15th place finish.
Last year, the women placed 13th as a team with a collective time of 1:42:30. Lopez finished 112th among 191 with a time of 20:55.
