Hoping to find the state championship magic of 2006, the Viking's men's water polo team heads to Golden West College today, Thursday, Nov. 19, for a first round game against Santa Rosa.
After the 10:30 a.m game, the Vikes return to Huntington Beach at 1:30 p.m. Friday to battle West Valley.
They then hope to play for the championship at noon Saturday.
Or the Vikings could end up playing for third place at 9 a.m. Saturday.
LBCC finished second in the Southern Section Regional after suffering an overtime loss to Golden West, 18-15, on Saturday, Nov 14.
The Vikes had defeated Orange Coast and Cuesa earlier in th tournament.
Viking head coach Chris Oeding said he isn't worried about the seeding: "We won two state championships in four years. Both of those titles came from being ranked No. 2."
The teams representing the north are West Valley, Diablo Valley and Santa Rosa. The other teams from the south are Golden West and Riverside.
Oeding said, "I've been coaching this school for eight years now and won state titles before and I know we can get another this year."
The Vikes have four sophomores starting, three returning players and are built on being an all-around good team, Oeding said.
"We have a group of guys who love to play hard and it's not difficult to get them to train hard for games."
Oeding said, "We are looking at getting back into the state championship finals, but our road runs through West Valley on Friday.
"West Valley has a great team. They have a dominant center and we will need to press or zone him on defense and watch for the shooters around the perimeter.
"We have to make them beat us with their weakness and not their strengths."
Oeding says he knows little about Santa Rosa: "I don't know much about them, but if we play our game and make them play to their weaknesses, we should do alright."
