"Cupcakes to me mean: Happiness, enjoyment and friendship. Cupcakes make people happy," said Carrie Foster, owner of Miss Priss Cupcakes.
Opened in 2008, Foster, a former real estate agent, found her niche in the pastry industry. After making cupcakes for a friend's birthday party, Foster was encouraged by party goers to start a business selling cupcakes. With the help of her husband, Jeff Foster, they embarked on their journey in the land of pastry making.
Located at 4131 Norse Way near the LAC campus, Miss Priss, greets customers with pastel pinks greens, and walls decorated in cupcake memorabillia.
As you're basking in the overall cuteness of the décor, you're suddenly hit with the aroma of icing and freshly baked pastries.
The bakery specializes in cupcakes with 21 flavors daily, including old favorites like vanilla, chocolate and red velvet. In addition to the old time favorites, there are also Heath bar madness, peanut butter and jelly, cookies and cream and coconut.
Of course, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try a cupcake from Miss Priss. I tried the Heath bar madness and I was instantly hooked. The cupcake combined chocolate cake and Heath bar icing. The instant I took a bite, I heard angels singing and thought to myself "Oh, this must be what heaven tastes like".
Most flavors are popular with the students. "The death by chocolate cupcake is delightfully sinful," undeclared major Troy Smith said.
The Fosters are constantly creating new flavors for cupcakes, drawing inspiration from their surroundings, TV, movies and radio.
Cupcakes range in size. From jumbo cupcakes, standard-sized cupcakes and the adorable mini-cupcakes.
The bakery is open six days a week. Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m - 7 p.m, Saturday 10 a.m- 6 p.m and Sunday noon-5 p.m.
Miss Priss Cupcakes also caters to the stars, such as: The casts of "Grey's Anatomy," "Samantha Who," "The Closer," former "Man Show" host Adam Corolla, and Dylan and Cole Sprouse of the "Suite Life of Zack and Cody."
The Fosters are also charitable, donating to many schools and charities, as well as giving all of the unsold baked goods to the Long Beach chapter of Food Finders, an organization that specializes in giving food to needy and less fortunate people. Foster said, "The charitable contributions have been the most rewarding part of the cupcake business thus far. We really enjoy that."
Cupcakes are available to order for any of your future events in a bevy of flavors and can be specialized for you. More information is available by visiting Missprisscupcakes.com or by calling 337-6385.
