The Viking volunteer resource center will be accepting monetary donations for the International response fund of the American Red Cross for response to global emergencies.
The donations may be at the LAC cashier's office in N106. Checks may be made payable to LBCC ASB, disaster relief fund. More information is available by contacting the Viking volunteer center at 938-4795 or in E118. For PCC donations can be made directly to the cashier's office.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake caused highest worldwide death toll since the 2004 tsunami in Asia. The hardest hit area is Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.
The United Nations and Haitian government have declared an end to the search and rescue phase, although one man was found alive after 11 days in the rubble.
Some helpful students at LBCC have joined the support efforts. Student Alaysha Kennedy said, "People from all around the world have heard, so I'm pretty sure they will be helped. I pray they recover soon. I am going to donate some of my old clothes to help the Haitian community, I hope it helps make a difference."
Student Marcus Williams said, "I pray that they recover as soon as possible. I know people from all around the world will be willing to help them. They are in desperate need of it. I plan to help by donating clothes and canned goods to help out, and if I can, I'll try to make a money donation."
Student Melissa Hughes said, "I wish the Haitian community didn't have to go through such a terrible disaster. Although it was no one's fault, it's a very sad thing. I feel really bad for the people who lost their lives and loved ones. I hope it doesn't take too long to fix everything up and for people to find places to live."
People choose several ways to donate through mobile devices by texting the word "YELE" to 501501 to donate $5 on behalf of the YELE Haitian foundation founded by Haitian musician Wyclef Jean.
Donors may text the word "Haiti" to 85944 to donate $5 on behalf of the rescue union mission and Medcorp International.
Or people may text the word "Haiti" to 25383 to donate $5 on behalf of the International Rescue Committee.
Another option is to text the word "Haiti" to donate $5 to The The United Way worldwide disaster fund. Or they may text the word "Haiti" to donate $10 on behalf of the American Red Cross.

Thanks for the story mentioning the hotline. I'm not sure where you heard that 888-407-4747 has anything to do with the State of California.
